Feature writing assignment 15 percent of final grade

I will be marking you very hard on this as you’ve had practice and feedback on feature writing from me. I’ve taught it in class and there is an entire module/week (4) devoted to it. Do everything that is required.

Write a feature story about someone you know. Your subject could be a co-worker, friend or fellow UCW student. The topic is a memorable event at school or in a job.

Use at least three direct quotes from your subject.

Use the diamond style of feature writing.

Give your story an engaging headline.

Minimum 400 words to a maximum of 450 words. No fewer and no more. Your headline and cover page words do not count under the word count.

Project rubric:

Grammar & punctuation (caps, lower case, commas): 15

Proper use of feature writing style, sentences, paragraphs, spacing: 10

Proper quotes – three direct quotes: 15 (you must get all three correct to get the mark – otherwise 0)

Tell an interesting story that keeps the reader engaged – diamond formula: 20

Engaging first paragraph of first 3-5 sentences: 10

Engaging headline: 5

Word count met: 5

Spelling & word choice, sentences make sense: 10

Scared and excited at the same time.

This is how second year UCW student Karen Tankard describes her move to Vancouver to study.

“I barely knew how to find Canada on a map, let alone Vancouver,” she said.

Now, she never wants to leave Vancouver. But, her family back home may have other plans for her. They want her to return and run the family business.
