of the most contemporary and evidence-based care to patients. Among the foundational elements
of care that nurse practitioners must consistently prioritize is patient safety. Given the persistent
and pressing issue of patient falls in the healthcare industry, the prevention of such incidents
assumes paramount importance for nurse practitioners who are dedicated to upholding primary
care standards. In this context, safeguarding patients from falls emerges as an indispensable and
ongoing concern, representing a tangible manifestation of their unwavering commitment to the
well-being of those under their care.

The incidence of falls results in significant harm and loss of life each year among
millions of individuals aged 65 and above (Kruschke & Butcher, 2017). This fact alone
underscores the compelling interest in the subject of fall prevention for the enhancement of
patient safety. Moreover, the financial burden associated with falls continues to escalate, with
expenses surpassing $31 billion in 2015 for nonfatal falls. Medicare has even classified falls as a
“never event”, emphasizing that fall prevention is not only imperative for ensuring patient safety
but also for significantly advancing the healthcare industry’s economic prospects. Falls are not
only more prevalent in the elderly population but also more deadly, with one in five falls
resulting in severe injuries, including fatalities (Kruschke & Butcher, 2017). This underscores
the crucial nature of fall prevention information for everyone involved in caring for the elderly,

from certified nursing assistants to registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and even family
caregivers.
In the evidence-based practice article, “Falls Prevention for Older Adults,” the author
delineates the definition of a fall, individuals susceptible to falling, the impact of falls on the
aging demographic, a comprehensive assessment for fall risk, and a ten-step procedure for
preventing falls. All of these stages assume a pivotal role in addressing fall prevention, with the
most essential components being proficient evaluation skills and appropriate patient education.
The initial steps involve assessing prior falls, identifying factors contributing to fall risk,
evaluating medication usage, inspecting the patient’s living environment, assessing their gait,
conducting mobility tests, focusing on balance and coordination, and continuously monitoring
and evaluating for changes, as an individual who may not be at risk today could very well be at
risk tomorrow. Once a need has been identified, solutions include enhancing lighting, removing
rugs, developing personalized exercise regimens, recommending suitable footwear, addressing
visual impairments, supplementing with vitamin D, minimizing medication usage when feasible,
teaching strategies to mitigate postural hypotension, and supplying ample educational materials
to patients and their families (Kruschke & Butcher, 2017). The dissemination of this evidencebased research information aims to reduce falls in the aging population by promoting changes in
behavior and the environment, empowering those responsible for geriatric patient care with
protocols and tools that can prevent injuries, leading to improved health and longevity, and
ultimately a higher quality of life.
