Purpose of this Discussion

The sheltering model most of us are familiar with has been around a long time. And as we learned in Module 1 of this course, this original model began over 100 years ago and was created to serve a different purpose than what we need from a shelter today.

Nonetheless, many shelters are still run the same way all these years later. We have come a long way in the industry as a whole, but with so many pets still needlessly dying in shelters, it’s time to make a change to this system. Because the traditional model of animal shelters is still found in many communities today, changing these archaic practices is difficult but not impossible.

In this course, we are continually looking at new ways of doing things in animal services and how to make our practices more reflective of what our communities need and want.

Therefore, the purpose of this particular assignment is to learn a bit more about a new pilot which recently kicked off in by American Pets alive in 2020: The Human Animal Support Services (HASS) model. (Links to an external site.) One of the intentions of this pilot is to offer a community-based, support services solution to animal homelessness. A recent article in Fast Company (Links to an external site.) talks about how this model can look as it’s being piloted in a shelter in Tucson, Arizona. Additionally, Best Friends Podcast hosted an interview with Kristen Hassen, Maddie’s® American Pets Alive! Director, who has been part of the team working hard to see this vision of a better future in animal sheltering become a reality. We’ll examine the myths that frequently come up for those running the pilot. Often these myths are believed to be true with little facts or data to back up the opinions. We’ll also familiarize ourselves with the facts of what the future of animal sheltering could look like.

As the leader of a shelter, what issues do you feel you’d need to proactively address with the community to successfully move a shelter in this community-based direction?
